Design Intelectual Property
Why We Do Not Give Work Files For Free
A Simple Analogy
The best analogy we can think of is going out to dinner. When we pay for a dinner out in a restaurant, all we get is that one meal for that one visit. The price doesn’t include the chef coming out, giving us his recipe, utensils, and ingredients aas well as a tutorial to take home. You, as the client, are paying for the delivery of the final design product. Nothing more, nothing less.”
The work we put in are also a result trade secret learnt over years of experience and is considered Intellectual property. it’s not something to be given out freely for someone else to use. The client is paying for the final work, not the tools to make it
A Simple Analogy
If you’re a business owner, marketing manager or brand manager struggling with your ‘free’ software and trying to make it all look good, thinking, “This is too hard, I should be spending my time building the business”, you’ve come to the right place.

Third Party Involvement
All sorts of elements are used in a design job. Designers spend a good amount of money purchasing licenses for fonts, photos, and graphic elements that are often the works of someone else.
We do not own these tools, they are the property of their respective creators, we only pay to have the right to use it so we can create awesome designs for you. It would be unethical and illegal for us to release those rights to you as we do not own them.

Hardware and Software Limitations
Even if you have the work-file, it doesn’t mean you have the capabilities to manipulate them. If the files are to be templated, they have to organized and labeled so that another designer is able to understand and use them.
Software and hardware compatibility may also be a problem when accessing these files. Graphic files can also be very large. Our heavy duty computers allow us to open and manipulate these files with ease while a system that is not built to handle it will slow down to a crawl by even the simplest actions. Besides that, one needs to have the right plugins, fonts, image licensing to even view the file properly.
Work Files vs Mockup Files

Work Files vs Mockup Files
There is a difference. What you see on our branding mockups are visualizations of what the final product will look like. It is not what is used to make the actual product. These usually require more work and additional software to prep the design to be sent to your manufacturer or printer to produce.
I do need the work files as I have an in house team, or I want to be able to edit them later.
Sure thing, just let us know prior to the project that it is required, and we will factor this into our quote and make sure we prepare the files and set it up in a way that is easy for you to use yourself in the future. This is typically 100% of the project fee. We would usually ask you anyway before starting the project to see what you require. We have done this as well for clients, it is just an additional cost or arrangement.
