Ria Malay Kitchen, Leederville
What a great way to end a Friday! My friend Christina from Sprinkling of Spice invited me to dine in Ria, a new Malaysian restaurant. Growing up in Malaysia, I was definitely up for testing it out. Great authentic Malaysian food is hard to come by in Perth, in my opinion. The restaurant has a nice earthy feel to it, and it’s quite dimly lit inside, which is why my photos are dark. Had to use Christina’s flash to light the food, else there won’t be pictures at all! Anyway, the person that served us was really attentive and was lovely, and we had trouble choosing what to eat from the menu, everything sounds mouth-watering.
We decided on Mum’s Loh Ak (braised caramelized duck) and Nyonya Achard Fish, which is a whole fried fish fillet with tangy turmeric and ginger sauce, accompanied with nasi kunyit. Food arrived promptly, and we were trying to get our photos as quick as possible so we can dig in!
I loved it. However, being the Asian I am, I would have loved to throw in a few more chillies in, as it wasn’t spicy for me. Then again, I put chillies on everything, lots of it.
We were greedy when it came to dessert, ordering the dessert platter which had all of the selections on their menu: sago melaka, kuih dadar, pandan brulee, and coconut parfait. By far the best dish of the night, the Pandan Creme Brulee. I love pandan flavoured dishes, but this was something I’ve never tried before. It’s not too heavy, which is what I like. I would definitely be coming back to try more different dishes next time!
